There’s a lot of buzz right now about the Law of Attraction and manifestation. A plethora of coaches are making claims to help you manifest whatever you desire.
Right now some popular promises are:
MORE MONEY, LUXURIOUS TRAVEL, YOUR SOUL-MATE, YOUR DREAM BODY
Sounds pretty great right?
But great to who exactly? Your ego or your soul?
Let’s have a closer look…
Our ego’s are heavily tapped into the collective consciousness and our culturally- specific social programming. We are essentially taught to want certain things. These desires are often imposed on us from our parents or other influential adults or just society in general.
For example, a teen says they really want to go to college. But if they sit with themselves and tap into their intuition, they don’t think college is the best decision for them right now. But they ignore that inner guidance and follow what their family has told them is a more “secure, successful” path.
Or you may want your “dream body”? But where do your ideas about an ideal body come from? Do you want to be a certain size or look a particular way because of socialized cultural standards of attractiveness, beauty or sex appeal? If you actually dropped into your heart, you might find out your desires are quite different than you originally imagined.
So, the very first step to manifestation should be to get underneath the desire.
- Ask yourself the very important question: WHY do I want this?
- How would I think, feel or act differently if I attained it?
- What do I think it will say about me or my life if I attain it?
- Do any other important people in my life want this for me too? Why?
There are often several different answers to these questions. That’s perfectly normal. We are complex, multi-layered beings. Once you get an answer, keep asking yourself “Is there more to this? Is there something I’m refusing to see?” Then invite those parts/voices forward. You’ll be amazed at what comes up once its given space to do so.
After going through these questions, you may discover you don’t have a very powerful reason or “why” behind your desire. You may discover, it’s more a socially conditioned “ego desire” than a true innate soul desire.
For example, you really want a new car! Upon digging deeper and being brutally honest with yourself, you realize you want a new car because of what you think it will say about you. You think you will be seen as financially successful and more “adult-like.” You also realize several of your friends make jokes about your current car’s condition and you want to stop feeling embarrassed.
So, underneath this desire for a new car are actually wounds. Wounds that you are “not enough” as you are and you need this external thing as proof you are what you want to be: financially secure, responsible, mature, equal to others.
Coming from “lack” energy or desiring something for ego validation is not effective fuel for manifestation. Yet so many of us don’t want to look at these deeper subconscious thoughts or beliefs. We want to just focus on the visualizations or positive affirmations.
But the truth is, your subconscious will sabotage all your manifestation attempts if you refuse to acknowledge it.
So you asked the tough questions and were completely honest with yourself. You discovered some wounds under your desires. Now what?
Just allowing them space to be seen and heard is monumental. Before now, you may have refused to acknowledge those thoughts and feelings at all. To take it a step further, show them some loving kindness and compassion.
I get into this much deeper with my clients. I call the process “psyche integration.” I will elaborate more about that process in the next blog post. Stay tuned!
In summary, the essential step is to dig deeper into your desires and determine if they are “ego desires” and coming from a place of wounding or “lack.” If so, definitely do some healing work around it. It’s possible that once you clear this, the desire will actually morph or transform. It will no longer be what it once was, but a more purely intentioned version of it.
For example, you thought you desired to loose 15 lbs but after doing some excavating and healing, you discover you really want to feel stronger in your body and have more energy. Thus the desire has shifted and is actually more empowered. The energy you bring to eating healthier or exercising is going to be different if you’re embodying “I want to feel strong and energized” versus “I want to loose 15 lbs”. See the difference?!
If you are currently trying to manifest anything in your life, I invite you to complete this process.
It could be completely life-changing!
